The façade of the psychiatric hospital in Kalmar is decorated with a fantasy structure by RECKLI.
Covering 25,000 square meters, the new hospital building in the Swedish city of Kalmar will be the central hub for psychiatric care in the region starting in 2022. Three structures with three, four and eight floors together offer 25,000 square meters of usable space. Construction work is scheduled for completion at the end of 2021, with the move taking place at the turn of the year.
The new building was designed by Krook & Tjäder, one of Sweden’s largest architectural firms. Instead of one intimidating structure, the architects designed three building sections at different heights. The building is characterized by its rounded corners and a light concrete façade, interrupted by numerous windows.
For the design of the concrete façade, the architects decided to use a formliner from the RECKLI SELECT series to structure the exposed concrete. The 1/174 Gascogne design brings curved symmetrical lines to the façade, giving it a wave-like texture.
RECKLI sent 109 matrices to the Swedish precast plant Benders for the work. The experts there placed the matrices in the formwork during the casting of the precast concrete elements in order to imprint the structure in the concrete. Class C35/45 concrete was used, and a total of 12,000 square meters of concrete surface were created with the RECKLI formliners.
