British Projects Get Industry Prize
The Concrete Society honored both the Television Centre and the White Collar Factory in London with an award for excellence in concrete. Both projects achieved their looks with RECKLI formliners.
Two great projects in Great Britain have been honored with an award from the British Concrete Society for their unmistakable concrete looks. The jury awarded the Television Centre and the White Collar Factory, both in London, the ‘Excellence in Concrete’ prize. We are overjoyed, along with the whole project team and especially our British colleagues Wayne Sewell and Joe Russel, who supported both projects.
The Television Centre, the headquarters of the British broadcaster the BBC up until 2013, was partly torn down and now plays host to apartments. The new building is 10 floors high. In the eyes of the jury, the internal walls, made from a wooden frame and in-situ poured concrete, are an excellent feature. ‘Attention to detail is apparent, producing an excellent overall appearance, one of the best in-situ finishes seen in years. Visually, the ten-storey-high in-situ board-marked finish to one side of the atrium is the stand-out feature of this development, which will certainly show the public what can be achieved with concrete.’
The White Collar Factory office and apartment complex also made an impression on the jury. The design plays with geometric shapes and different materials, with concrete playing a starring role. ‘The extent and consistence of the board-marked finish is impressive. If The Society was discussing/advising on concrete finish to enquirers it would be suggested as a possible benchmark.’
The designs for both projects came from the same architecture firm: AHMM architects brought their ideas for the façade design to the British branch of RECKLI and opted for a wooden texture. While the texture on the exterior and interior walls of the White Collar Factory runs horizontally, it is vertical in the Television Centre. The boards used to make the formliners were processed and arranged individually until the texture and patterns complied perfectly with the architects’ expectations.
